LOCAL ARTIST CONNECTS TRANSATLANTIC WISH FLAGS
A new inspirational community project created by local artist Marie Laywine will link two Dorset schools with Seattle, USA, to re-establish the connection made by former students. The Dorset schools: Salway Ash CE School and Watercleaves Nursery School, will join with Margaret Mead Elementary School in Washington State to produce Wish Flags, storyboards, and share information on their differing approach to education.
The Wish Flag is another version of the Tibetan Prayer Flag and workshops will enable school children and the public to create unique and beautiful expressions of desire. When completed they will be installed on the peripheral railing of St Catherine’s Chapel, Abbotsbury, followed by a short candle-lit ceremony inside. The Chapel has been specially chosen for its 600 year old history of granting wishes.
Artist Marie Laywine said from her studio in Abbotsbury “I am delighted that local children will have the opportunity to create these beautiful flags. Expressing your wish on a silky piece of fabric externalises it and gives it a form which becomes quite clear in the process. The public are also invited to express a heartfelt desire, wish, or prayer and are welcome to come along to the public Workshops.”
The schools will have two days to create their flags, after which public Workshops will take place during Abbotsbury Art Weeks from May 23 – 30 at a cost of £10.00 per adult, £5.00 per child. All materials are provided. Please call 01305 871175 or email: info@marielaywine.com for a brochure.
