wendy poole - unconceptualism

Wendy Poole lives and works in King Street, Bridport, Dorset

New narratives are constantly emerging from Wendy Poole's paintings. Forms appear and disappear, figures, landscapes, shapes and shadows, over-lapping, revealled and concealed. Hers is an intuative process, a non-conceptual awakening of subconscious stories, dreams and memories.

Poole's paintings seem to have been created in a shamanic space. They appear like automatic writing, limitless in scope and unregulated by theory or fashion. They are paintings about awareness and existance, uncluttered by intention or pretentiousness, and wonderfully free of any sense of self-consciousness in their creation.

And yet they are deeply informed paintings, the fruit of a precise and discerning intellect and a well educated eye. They have a richly English sensibility, continuing the romantic tradition of Samual Palmer, William Blake and Edward Calvert. They also draw from surrealism, photogrpahy, cubism and grafitti, but wear all these influences lightly, as if the work is prepared first on a subconscious level and then spontaneously realised in paint.
