Bridport Open Studios 2009

In recent months Bridport has been gaining a national reputation for it's vibrant art scene, and the Open Studios event in August is one of the best ways to experience what makes this little town so special. The open event was started by artist Caroline Ireland in 1999 and remains an exciting artist-led project, including over 100 artists from across West Dorset and dozens from the the highly respected St Michael's Studio complex in the artistic quarter of the town.

The 11th annual Bridport Open Studios will be taking place on the Bank Holiday weekend from 29th to 31st August, with the launch being held at the Electric Palace Cinema, Bridport, from 6pm on Thurday 27th August.

What really stands out at the Open Studios is not just the diversity but the high quality of works being produced. The event involves many award-winning, nationally and internationally respected artists working in various mediums, including painting, sculpture, furniture and ceramics. Such is its esteem that Bridport Open Studios now attracts thousands of visitors from all over the country.

With all the excitement surrounding the Bridport art scene, this is a wonderful opportunity for visitors to look behind the scenes as they are welcomed into the studios in which works are created. Artists will be available at the venues to speak about their techniques and inspirations, and various demonstrations will be held over the weekend.

The area is certainly a magnet for artists of all kinds. There’s a real creative buzz in the air, and Bridport is rightly coming to the fore as a centre for the arts. Many visit just to enjoy the work, the atmosphere and the beautiful surroundings, while others looking to invest in art have been quick to see the potential on offer.
